The fifty-thousand-dollar promise: what a Roadster reservation buys

Tesla reopened Roadster reservations in September 2026 with a $50,000 deposit. What the terms said, what was promised, and why patience is part of the price.

Few cars have been reserved for as long as they have been awaited. Tesla first took deposits for a new Roadster in November 2017, with production then promised for 2020. In September 2026, the company opened reservations again — and the price of a place in the queue was $50,000.

The terms

According to Electrek’s report of 20 September 2026, the reservation asked for $5,000 by credit card on the day, described on the page as fully refundable, followed by the remaining $45,000 by wire transfer within ten days. The reservation was not final until the wire cleared. Tesla announced an unveiling for 1 October 2026 near Waco, Texas, where it said pricing, specifications and production targets would be revealed.

A deposit is not a price. It is a bet on a date.

The history buyers are betting against

Electrek counts at least eight delays for the car since 2017, without a single customer delivery. The 2017 Founders Series required the full $250,000 up front. Some earlier depositors reported difficulty obtaining refunds.

Our view

Hypercars have always sold anticipation as much as engineering. The difference here is scale and time: a nine-year wait, and a deposit large enough to buy a very good car outright. If you reserve, read the refund terms carefully and treat every date as a target, not a promise.

The new grand tour

The eighteenth-century grand tour was an education by road. Its modern revival is about the same thing — taking the long way, on purpose.

Why the grand tourer still matters
